The TGA has revoked its previous permission that permitted pharmacies to advertise the availability of nicotine vaping products.

The Albanese Government has implemented various reforms to further restrict access to these products.

They remain available from pharmacies with a prescription. They are considered unapproved prescription medicines.

On 1 January, the TGA revoked an advertising permission from August 2021 that permitted pharmacies and related groups to advertise the availability of nicotine vaping products.

The permission prohibited the advertising of individual nicotine vaping products by brand and significantly limited the type of promotion, including a prohibition on any reference to flavours.

However, the representations were authorised to be made on a website, social media platform, poster or other print media.

It imposed several detailed and specific restrictions that essentially allowed pharmacies and pharmacy marketing groups to make three pre-approved statements promoting the availability of nicotine vaping products with a prescription.

The representations were limited to text-only and in just three colours or shades. The size and location of posters and the number of advertisements on websites and in print media were also limited.

The TGA has now revoked this permission. The decision effectively prohibits any promotion of nicotine vaping products, aligning with the standard restriction imposed on prescription medicines.
