Melbourne-based Medical Developments International has announced plans to build a new manufacturing facility.

The new facility will create 15 new jobs in Melbourne’s south-east and is expected to boost the company's exports by $50 million.

The Victorian government has committed $365,000 to support construction of the new facility. The funding is part of the state government’s Future Industries Manufacturing Program, one of three industry programs under the Future Industries Fund to support high growth industries and create jobs.

Victorian minister for industry and employment, Wade Noonan, visited the company yesterday to announce the investment.

“The Andrews Labor Government is helping manufacturers like Medical Developments International to create jobs and target new growth opportunities,” said Mr Noonan.

“This funding boost will create local jobs in Melbourne’s south east and enable the company to build a new facility so they can manufacture an important pain relief product to be sold worldwide.

“Our Future Industries Manufacturing Program is about giving local companies the support they need to transition towards an advanced manufacturing economy.”

MDI will also employ production and warehouse assistants, production assembly workers, and create new roles in its regulatory and quality department as a result of the $2.5 million project.

MDI is a pharmaceutical drug and medical and veterinary equipment business, with a focus on emergency pain relief and respiratory products.

It is the only company in the world that manufactures Methoxyflurane, the acting ingredient in PENTHROX, a fast acting trauma and emergency relief product.

MDI will manufacture PBS-listed PENTHROX at the new facility for export. It is expected the company’s production capacity will increase ten-fold within 12 months as a result of the project.
