The federal government has a publicly stated ambition of wanting any approved vaccine to be manufactured in Australia but it will come down to the technology. It is almost certain to rely on CSL and its ability to manufacture a vaccine using its existing capability based on the recombinant technology platform. The technologies underpinning the Moderna, AstraZeneca (Oxford), J&J and Pfizer vaccines can not currently be manufactured at scale in Australia.
